Children's Minnesota Hospital President and CEO Marc Gorelick Addresses Disparities in Healthcare for People of Color
Marc Gorelick, MD, President and CEO of Children’s Minnesota Hospital, highlights the disproportionate health impact of COVID-19 for people of color and discusses how the pandemic is one example of the broader social and economic inequities and disparities for African Americans, Asians and Latinos.
In a conversation with Dr. Lori Esposito Murray, President of the Committee for Economic Development of The Conference Board, Gorelick talks about the need to prioritize equity as a key indicator of healthcare quality. Internally, Gorelick has implemented an equity dashboard and held leaders accountable by tying a portion of compensation to equity.
“The first thing you have to do is recognize that equity is a core component of quality,” said Gorelick. “You have to commit to treating it the same way you treat other domains of quality [like safety and outcomes]…It’s measurement. You can’t improve what you don’t measure.”
